KCSE Exam Preparation Guides: Subject-by-Subject Roadmap
Complete KCSE exam preparation guide — paper structure, time allocation per question, marking-scheme strategies and recommended reference books for every subject.
Know the paper before you sit it
Every KCSE paper has a fixed structure published by KNEC. Memorising the structure cuts your exam stress by half because you walk in already knowing how many marks each section carries and how long you have.
Quick reference: KCSE paper structures
- Mathematics Alt A: Paper 1 (100 marks, 2½ hrs) — Section I has 16 short questions × 2 marks; Section II has 8 questions × 5 marks, choose 5. Same shape for Paper 2.
- English: Paper 1 (60 marks, 2 hrs) functional writing + cloze + oral skills. Paper 2 (80 marks, 2½ hrs) comprehension + literary appreciation + grammar + set-book context. Paper 3 (60 marks, 2½ hrs) imaginative composition + compulsory set-book essay + optional set-book.
- Biology / Chemistry / Physics: Paper 1 (theory, 80 marks), Paper 2 (theory, 80 marks), Paper 3 (practical, 40 marks).
- Kiswahili: Insha (40), Lugha (80), Fasihi (80).
How to read a marking scheme
Marking schemes list acceptable answers, award points and tied marks. A tied mark means you only get the mark if you also stated something earlier. Train yourself to spot ties — they explain why students who "knew the answer" still lost marks.
