How to Check KCSE Results 2026 — SMS, Online Portal & Replacement

Step-by-step guide to checking your KCSE results in Kenya: SMS code 20076, the KNEC online portal, the result slip vs the certificate, what to do if your results show 'X', 'Y', 'W' or 'P', and how to apply for a remark.

When are KCSE results released?

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) traditionally releases KCSE results in early to mid-January, about three weeks after the last paper is sat. The Cabinet Secretary for Education makes the official release at KICD, and results become available to candidates within hours of the announcement.

Method 1 — Check KCSE results by SMS (fastest)

  1. Open the SMS app on any Safaricom, Airtel or Telkom Kenya phone.
  2. Type your KCSE index number followed by the word KCSE. Example: 12345678901 KCSE.
  3. Send to 20076.
  4. You will receive your mean grade, total points and subject-by-subject grades within seconds. Cost: about Ksh 25.

The index number is 11 digits — 7 digits for your school's centre code and 4 digits for your candidate number. It is printed on your KCSE registration slip and your exam desk card.

Method 2 — Check KCSE results online (KNEC portal)

  1. Visit www.knec.ac.ke or the dedicated portal results.knec.ac.ke.
  2. Click "KCSE Results".
  3. Enter your index number and the year of examination.
  4. Enter the captcha and click Submit.
  5. Your full result slip will load. Use Ctrl + P to print it.

Method 3 — Collect the printed result slip from your school

Schools download the official result slips from the KNEC CP2 portal within 48 hours of release. Visit your school with your national ID or birth certificate to collect a stamped copy. This is the slip KUCCPS, HELB and employers will recognise until your certificate is printed.

How KCSE mean grade is calculated

KNEC computes a points total from your seven best subjects (Maths + English + Kiswahili + 2 sciences + 2 humanities/applied subjects), where A = 12, A- = 11, B+ = 10 … E = 1. The total is divided by 7 and rounded to the nearest grade.

What if you suspect a marking error? — Applying for a KCSE remark

  1. Write a formal application to the KNEC CEO within 30 days of result release.
  2. Attach a copy of your result slip and ID.
  3. Pay the prescribed remark fee per paper at KNEC's Equity Bank account.
  4. Submit at KNEC's Mtihani House offices (South C, Nairobi) or your nearest Huduma Centre.
  5. Results of the remark are usually communicated within 60 days.

Lost your result slip?

You can re-download it any time from www.knec.ac.ke → Query Management Information System (QMIS). You will need your index number and year. If you have lost your certificate as well, see our companion guide: How to Replace Your KCSE Certificate.

After the results — what next?

Common questions

Can I check someone else's KCSE results? Only with their consent — you need their index number. Misuse violates the KNEC Act.

Is the SMS service free? No, expect roughly Ksh 25 per query.

Why are my results not showing? Wait an hour — portals are overloaded on release day. If the issue persists for 24 hours, email the official KNEC contact channel published on their website with your index number.
