The Homologous-Series Mind Map

Alkanes → Alkenes → Alkynes → Alkanols → Alkanoic acids → Esters → Alkanoates. Each step is a single functional-group change. Memorise the conversion reagents and you can answer almost any Paper 2 organic question.

Key Reactions to Drill

Cracking, addition (Br₂, H₂, HX, H₂O), polymerisation, esterification, fermentation, dehydration of alkanols. Each comes with conditions — temperature, catalyst, pressure. KNEC (knec.co.ke) penalises missing conditions.

Naming Rules That Save You

Longest chain → number from the end nearest the functional group → name substituents alphabetically. For alcohols, the -OH gets the lowest locant. Don't skip the dash and number.

Ethene → (Br₂) → 1,2-dibromoethane | Ethene → (H₂O / phosphoric acid / 300°C / 60 atm) → Ethanol | Ethanol → (oxidation / acidified KMnO₄) → Ethanoic acid. Memorise three of these and any flow chart becomes obvious.
