What Cluster Points Actually Are
Cluster points are a weighted aggregate of four KCSE subjects specific to each degree programme. They are NOT the same as your KCSE mean grade. The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) publishes the cluster groups each year; the underlying KCSE results come from KNEC at knec.co.ke.
The Formula in Plain English
Raw cluster points = (your 4 subject points / max possible 4 subject points) × (your overall KCSE points / 84) × 48. The maximum is 48.000. Most competitive courses (Medicine, Law, Actuarial Science, Engineering) cut off above 45.5.
Picking Your Four Cluster Subjects Strategically
For Medicine: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics/Physics, English/Kiswahili. For Engineering: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English/Kiswahili. Score A or A- in these four and the rest of your subjects matter much less for university placement.
Revision Cycle for Cluster Subjects
Focus 60% of revision time on your four cluster subjects in the final two terms. Use KCSE past papers and marking schemes — all free from KNEC Hub.
