Time Management for KCSE, College & University Students in Kenya
How to plan your school week, your weekend, your holiday and your exam day. Templates included for the day scholar, the boarder and the working student.
The four buckets of student time
Every week has 168 hours. Sleep takes 56 (8 ร 7). School/college takes around 45. Meals, transport and chores take 30. That leaves you about 35 hours of discretionary time โ the hours that decide your grade.
The 35-hour weekly template
- 15 hours of active revision (past papers + retrieval practice).
- 5 hours of new content learning.
- 5 hours of group / peer study.
- 10 hours of rest, exercise, faith, family โ non-negotiable.
For the boarding student
Prep time is gold. Use the first 20 minutes of every prep for retrieval practice, the next 60 for past papers, the last 20 for reviewing tomorrow's classes.
For the day scholar
Your enemy is the matatu and the phone. Pre-pack your bag the night before, study on the matatu (audio summaries), and treat the period 6โ9pm as untouchable study time.
The exam morning timetable
- 5:30 โ wake, shower, light breakfast (eggs + bread + tea).
- 6:30 โ 15-minute review of your one-page summary only. Do not learn anything new.
- 7:30 โ be at the exam centre with all your stationery.
