University Career Advice for Kenyan Students — Choose Smart, Earn Sooner

How to pick a university course in Kenya that matches your strengths, the job market and your wallet. Includes ROI tables for popular degrees.

The three questions to ask before you pick a course

  1. Am I good at it? Cluster points tell you what you can do, not what you should do.
  2. Does the market need it? Check KNBS labour statistics, LinkedIn job postings and parastatal recruitment ads.
  3. What is the ROI? Tuition cost ÷ first-year salary. Anything under 1.5× pays back fast.

Should you take a parallel programme?

If KUCCPS placed you in a course you do not want, the answer is usually no. Self-sponsored fees often exceed Ksh 600,000 a year. Reapply in the second revision window first — it is free.

Build a portfolio while you study

Internships, attachments, freelance gigs and certifications (Google, AWS, Cisco, ACCA) carry more weight with Kenyan recruiters than a Second Class Upper alone.
